Procrastination is a habit, a bad habit, that you encourage and reinforce every time you delay. Is it hard for you to get tasks done, and get them done on time? Do you worry about your assignments that you turn in late? Do you feel listless and apathetic about the demands placed on you? Procrastination is counterproductive to success. It is negative and destructive. Often you waste more time making excuses for yourself, when you could jump right in and accomplish the job.

Procrastination happens when we talk ourselves out of doing something important. We encourage ourselves to delay doing a necessary task. To defeat a bad habit like procrastination, you need to replace it with a positive habit, the habit of taking action. Every time you procrastinate, you become better at procrastinating. Every time you take action, you become better at taking action. Whether you choose to take action or to procrastinate, either way, you will become good at something. Which do you prefer?

The Main Reason You Procrastinate

There are lots of reasons for procrastinating behavior, like fear of failure, and I'll cover them later. But in spite of all these reasons, the underlying basis for procrastination is that we are talking to ourselves with bad mental messages. Your procrastination spring from your personal beliefs, your hidden feelings about the task. These feelings govern your motivation and control your response. If you have negative feelings, you will tend to put off or delay. If your habit of procrastination is interfering with your life and well-being, a good therapist can teach you how to move beyond it.

What Excuses Do You Use When You Procrastinate?

When you procrastinate, you make excuses to avoid doing your work. Your self-talk destroys your motivation. Which is your favorite excuse to postpone important work?
  • Do you often tell yourself the work is too hard?
  • Do you tell yourself they didn't give you enough time, or that you need better instructions?
  • Do you tell yourself what a screw-up you are?
  • Perhaps you delay starting the task, because there's lots of time before your deadline. So you allow yourself to postpone it, until suddenly the time is gone.
  • Some procrastinators encourage delay by telling themselves that there's plenty of time and no need to rush.
  • You fib and tell yourself that you only need three hours to whip out the report, when in reality you know in your heart it will take a lot longer. With one excuse or the another, you deny reality.
  • You hope against hope that the work will be cancelled or someone else will do it.
  • Sometimes procrastination is a way to indulge yourself. You encourage yourself to goof off, to be a slacker. You seek pleasure and shirk responsibility. You avoid work because it gets in the way of having fun. You lack self-discipline.
  • Perhaps you tell yourself that the required work is trivial and unnecessary.
  • Sometimes you tell yourself you work better under pressure, so you let your work pile up until the last minute. Then all heck breaks lose, as you push yourself, cram for a presentation, pull an all-nighter before an exam. You tell yourself that you work better under pressure, but you know that's a fib, too. As a consequence, your last-minute effort is substandard work, not at all what you are capable of.
  • The things you say to yourself reinforce your slacker behavior, and encourage your habit to procrastinate.
  • There are many other excuses you probably use. You tell yourself that you are just too busy, or that people are demanding, or that the work is too complicated. Because you procrastinate, your grades suffer, your job evaluation report stinks, you show up late, and your teammates can't count on you.

The Reasons for Procrastination

Psychologists say there are many underlying reasons for procrastination.
  • a lack of self-esteem
  • a feeling of rebelliousness
  • a way to defy authority
  • a habit to get attention
  • a tool to cope with pressures
  • a way to exercise control of your life when you feel powerless
  • a habit to deal with fear of failure, because, if you don't start the job, you'll never fail at it
  • the behavior of a perfectionist who is always unsatisfied and critical of your own output.
  • your anxiety about making decisions. You are using procrastination as a coping mechanism to deal with stress. But procrastinating itself causes additional stress.

Use Positive Self-Talk to Stop Procrastinating

The best way to stop procrastinating is to listen to your self-talk, to recognize the way you motivate yourself and demotivate yourself with excuses. By changing your mental self-talk, you will make a lasting change in your behavior. When you change your self-talk, you will be eager to leap into the work and excited about the chance to show what you can do. Procrastinating ruins your peace of mind, and your sense of accomplishment, and your feeling of self-worth. Taking action is the way to overcome procrastination. The result will be positive success in school, on the job and with your friends.

Listen to your internal self-talk. Recognize the negative, lazy and defeatist attitude that bad self-talk encourages. Change your mental self-talk to upbeat, motivating and encouraging words. Nip negativity in the bud with deliberate positive self-talk, like the samples below. Use these upbeat phrases often, and repeat them like a mantra. At first they may seem artificial, but with repetition they will change your beliefs about yourself, and lead you to new habits. Each of these memes, repeated to yourself often, will change your outlook, and encourage you to take action. When you change your self-talk to positive, encouraging, upbeat messages, you will change your behavior.
  • If you are a perfectionist, start telling yourself that your work is pretty exceptional, but it doesn't have to be perfect.
  • If you are a delayer, tell yourself that the work will go quickly. Tell yourself that it's really pretty easy.
  • If you are afraid of failure, remind yourself that you are just as good as anyone else, if not better.
  • If you feel discouraged, remind yourself why you want to do a good job, that your goal is worthwhile and you can reach success.
  • If you feel scared or depressed, pay yourself compliments. Remind yourself of all the good you have accomplished.
  • Tell yourself how exciting it will feel to get this project wrapped up.
  • Tell yourself that no one can put you down or stand in the way of your success.
  • Tell yourself that the hardest part is starting, and after that the work gets much easier.
  • Tell yourself that the job is really pretty simple after all.
  • Tell yourself that you are in charge of your life, and you can take control of your life back from difficult people.
  • Tell yourself that you like doing the work and that you enjoy the time you spend on the task.
  • Remind yourself how proud you are to complete a project. Encourage, compliment and praise yourself.

Five Ways You Can Stop Procrastinating

  1. Upbeat Self-Talk. Use examples of positive self-talk like the ones above.
  2. Instant Activity. When a particular task intimidates you, just leap into it. Don't over-analyze it. Just take the initiative immediately and commit yourself to ten minutes of activity. Open the book, start writing, grab your tools and, as the saying goes, just do it. It's very likely that you will get absorbed in the task, and will continue work well beyond the first ten minutes.
  3. Avoid Distractions. Eliminate distractions like television, music, phones, texting and email. Turn off all the devices that will give you an excuse to procrastinate. Take your work to an isolated desk in the library. If you share your cubicle or your room, put a sign on your chair that says: "Hard at Work. Pretend I'm Invisible"
  4. Preparation. Another way to defeat procrastination is to get your workroom and your tools in order. Chaos and messiness discourage your initiative. A clean, quiet, well-lighted place will make it easier to work at your project and do your best.
  5. To-Do List. Using a to-do list or a day-by-day schedule is another way to stop procrastination. For many people, myself included, using a list reduces the stress of work hanging over their head. They learn how to list the work and work the list.

Your flaws are actually your strengths

Take a moment to think about what makes you unique. What’s that one thing that makes you feel different from other people in your life? Don’t let yourself get away with believing you aren’t unique, because that’s never true. I’m not talking about something that makes you one-in-a-million unique — this isn’t a fairytale, this is real life. I mean, what makes you stand out from your friends or coworkers? It doesn’t have to be anything extreme, but I do believe it’s there, and if you get honest with yourself, you believe it too.
Maybe there’s a trait you’re not thrilled about. Maybe you’re quiet and a bit uncomfortable in large social groups. Sure, that can be a disadvantage in certain situations, but that’s only one side of the story. People who feel socially awkward are usually a bit too “in their head” to act normally without overthinking things. Thinking too much feels like a flaw in those situations, but having a lot going on in your head can be a huge advantage in other parts of life. You might make a really good writer, comedian or entrepreneur. You probably have a great analytical mind that lot of people don’t.

Embrace your uniqueness

It’s far too common that people shy away from what they’re good at because they see it as a flaw. Whatever your unique “flaw” is, there’s a path where you can make it work for you. For my whole life, I’ve talked too much. If there’s silence, I fill the void by rambling, and when I catch myself, I feel embarrassed for not being able to just “play it cool”. I get so excited and then it’s almost out of my control. Until I considered writing and starting a podcast, it felt like a major personality flaw, but now my non-stop brain chatter is being funnelled into something productive and (hopefully) helpful to some people. I only had to learn how to reframe my flaw to make it something I’m proud of, and you can do the same. This is 2018 — whatever you’re passionate about, you can build a life around it with enough time and persistence.
Fortunately, everyone likes different things, so something you love might be something others can’t stand, and that’s an opportunity. Some people love numbers and problem solving, and some hate those things, but love gardening and cooking. Embrace your uniqueness and let it drive you forward into a place of fulfillment.

Failure is still progress

Even if you try something and fail, you’ll be in a much better place. If you want it badly enough, you’ll get back up and keep learning. If you realize it’s actually not what you thought it would be, then you can rest your mind knowing that you gave it a shot. If you fail initially at something you genuinely love, you won’t feel like giving up. You might be discouraged, but if you care about it, you will accept that everyone has to start somewhere. You’ll get back up and try again until you break through that barrier, and you’ll thank yourself for doing it.
Think about the difference between someone born into wealth and someone born into modest surroundings. The wealthy person may never really need to work. They might be able to relax their whole life, while the other has to work hard for everything. The thing is, working hard in life is like exercise for your mind. It strengthens your muscles for gratitude and fulfillment. Have you ever gone to the gym or done something physically exhausting? When did you feel better, before or after? The wealthy person’s life might be “easier”, but easy is the wrong goal. Fulfillment is the right goal.

Confronting your fear

Fear inside you is an indication of a deeper desire, and it’s not going away unless you face it head on. Ignored fears only fade when they turn to regrets. When you break down what you’re afraid of, the worst case scenario is never as bad as you think. Your fears almost never match up with what you’re losing by listening to those fears. There’s so much to gain and so little to lose, so take that next step today, whatever that is for you.

10 Phrases to Drop from Your Vocabulary

Whether you are leading a team meeting, presenting to a prospective client or delivering a keynote speech to a global audience, verbal mistakes will undermine your credibility and distract from your message.
If you want to have integrity and influence, consider dropping these phrases:

1. “I’m confused,” or “I don’t get it.”

Instead of putting all the responsibility on the other person, take co-ownership. Say, “Help me understand your position,” and remain open.

2. “You know what I mean?” and “Does that make sense?”

Asking for constant validation chips away at your command.

3. “I was like...” or “She was like...”

The word “like” is an unsophisticated setup that gets in the way of your clarity and credibility.

4. “Um, ah, uh, you know.”

Watch out for overuse of filler words and practice pausing to counteract the clutter.


5. “I’ve been too busy” or “I started writing an email and forgot to send it.”

Excuses are unattractive. Say, “I apologize for the inconvenience. You will have it by tomorrow.”

6. “Out-of-the-box thinking”

… should be retired. We can’t escape all the buzzword phrases, but ones like this have become boring.

7. “You always...”

Sweeping generalizations lack insight and get in the way of healthy dialogue. Be specific and avoid using vague blame tactics.

8. “I think we should kind of do it this way.”

Tentative language waters down your presence as a confident communicator. Make a solid recommendation and own it.

9. “I hate to say this, but…” and “John is a good person, but...”

Don’t try to disguise criticism with a layer of caring or say things that offer zero value.

10. “Really?”

It’s an all-purpose complaint that sounds like whining. Try making an interesting observation instead.
If you want to have more credibility and influence, be uh, like, you know, more intentional in your communication. Replace negative tone and lackluster words with positive tone and authentic appreciative words. Each new day is an opportunity to inspire greatness, so say something real.
